What Are Oxbridge Admissions Tests?

Oxbridge admissions tests are subject-specific written assessments used by the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge to shortlist candidates for interview. Because both universities receive vastly more strong applicants than they can offer places to, admissions tests play a decisive role in identifying the students most likely to thrive under the tutorial and supervision model that defines Oxbridge teaching.

The 2026 landscape looks very different from previous years. Oxford has retired the majority of its in-house admissions tests—including the MAT, PAT, TSA, CAT, MLAT, PhilAT, BMSAT, and AHCAAT—and replaced them with three standardised assessments run by UAT-UK, a joint venture between Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge. UCAT continues to be used for Medicine and LNAT for Law. Cambridge had already undertaken its own reform wave in 2024, dropping BMAT and introducing ESAT and TMUA.

The practical upshot is that applicants today prepare for fewer, more standardised tests than the Oxbridge candidates of even two years ago—but the tests themselves are newer, the past-paper banks are thinner, and the stakes remain extraordinarily high.

Who Takes It

Students in Year 13 applying for undergraduate entry to Oxford or Cambridge. Most candidates take at least one admissions test; some subjects (such as Medicine) require both an aptitude test and subject-specific assessments organised at the college level.

When It's Taken

Virtually all Oxbridge admissions tests are sat in October of Year 13, ahead of the 15 October UCAS deadline for Oxbridge applications. The October sitting is the only eligible window for Oxbridge candidates—candidates who miss it cannot apply for that admissions cycle.

Test Format

The UAT-UK tests (ESAT, TMUA, TARA) are computer-based assessments delivered online through Pearson VUE’s global test-centre network. UCAT is also computer-based, delivered via Pearson VUE. LNAT is a computer-based two-section test. Some Cambridge courses additionally require college-set written assessments during interview week in December.

Test Structure & Sections

Oxbridge admissions testing is no longer a single exam—it is a small family of tests, each mapped to particular subjects. Understanding which test your chosen course requires is the essential first step, because preparation is highly test-specific.

ESAT — Engineering and Science Admissions Test

Used for Biomedical Sciences, Engineering Science, Physics, and Physics and Philosophy at Oxford, and for Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge. The ESAT is modular: a compulsory Mathematics 1 module is followed by two further science or mathematics modules selected according to the course (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Advanced Mathematics). Each module is short, focused, and multiple-choice.

TMUA — Test of Mathematics for University Admission

Used for Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Philosophy, and Computer Science and Philosophy at Oxford, and for equivalent Maths and Computer Science courses at Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick, Durham, LSE, and others. Two multiple-choice papers assess mathematical thinking (Paper 1) and mathematical reasoning (Paper 2)—the latter including logic, proof, and the application of mathematics to unfamiliar problems.

TARA — Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions

The replacement for Oxford’s old Thinking Skills Assessment. Used for PPE, Economics and Management, Human Sciences, Experimental Psychology, Psychology Philosophy and Linguistics, History and Economics, and (subject to confirmation) History and Politics. The TARA comprises Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving multiple-choice sections, followed by a Writing Task assessing the candidate’s ability to construct a clear, reasoned written argument.

UCAT — University Clinical Aptitude Test

Used for Medicine at both Oxford and Cambridge (Cambridge adopted UCAT following the discontinuation of BMAT), and for Medicine at every other UK medical school. Five short, timed, computer-based sections—Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, and Situational Judgement—assess the cognitive and professional attributes associated with success in medical training.

LNAT — Law National Admissions Test

Used for Law at Oxford and at a range of other leading UK law schools (UCL, KCL, LSE, Durham, Bristol, Nottingham, Glasgow, SOAS). Section A is a 95-minute multiple-choice reading comprehension test. Section B is a 40-minute essay on one of three given topics, assessing the candidate’s ability to construct a sustained, balanced written argument.

Cambridge College-Set Written Assessments

For several Cambridge subjects—including English, History, Law, HSPS, Classics, and Theology—colleges set their own short written assessments ahead of or during the interview stage. Format, content, and length vary widely by college and course, so preparation must be calibrated to the specific college applied to.

How Oxbridge Admissions Tests Are Scored

Oxbridge admissions tests do not function like A-levels or GCSEs. They are shortlisting tools used alongside predicted grades, personal statement, school reference, and written work to decide who is invited to interview. A strong test score opens the door; a weak one usually closes it regardless of other strengths.

ESAT reports a score per module on a 1.0–9.0 scale with typical competitive scores of 6.0+ per module, and 7.0+ at the most selective colleges
TMUA reports a score on a 1.0–9.0 scale, with 6.5+ broadly competitive for Oxford and Cambridge Maths and Computer Science
TARA reports numerical scores for the multiple-choice sections alongside a qualitative assessment of the writing task; Oxford has historically looked for top-decile performance across the combined score
UCAT reports 1,200–3,600 cognitive total plus a Situational Judgement band (1–4); competitive Medicine applicants typically score 2,700+ with SJT Band 1 or 2
LNAT reports a 0–42 MCQ score and a separately-assessed essay; Oxford Law applicants are typically competitive from around 27–29+, with the essay assessed qualitatively
There is no single national pass mark—each college and course sets its own thresholds and adjusts them by year, cohort strength, and applicant pool
Scores are used in combination with predicted A-level/IB grades (typically AAA or AAA+ at Oxford, AA*A or equivalent at Cambridge) and the rest of the application

Preparation Timeline

Oxbridge preparation is unlike any earlier stage of UK selective assessment. Candidates are balancing A-level coursework, UCAS drafting, personal statement revision, admissions test preparation, and—if shortlisted—interview readiness, all within a compressed window that peaks between September and December of Year 13. Strategic, sequenced preparation is the difference between a commanding application and a rushed one.

12–18 MONTHS BEFORE (early Year 12)

Foundation Building

Confirm subject direction and target universities. Begin reading widely in the intended subject at university level—not syllabus-extension, but genuinely beyond-curriculum material. Identify which admissions test applies and familiarise yourself with the format. Begin engaging with the kind of thinking each test demands (mathematical problem-solving for TMUA, critical analysis for TARA, legal reasoning for LNAT).

6–9 MONTHS BEFORE (spring of Year 12)

Structured Practice Begins

Start systematic test-specific practice. Use official specimen papers from UAT-UK, Pearson VUE, UCAT Consortium, and LNAT Consortium. For the newer UAT-UK tests in particular, past-paper banks are thinner than for the old Oxford tests, so diagnostic work and teacher-led interpretation of performance matters more. Begin drafting the personal statement. Establish a routine of 3–4 hours of test preparation per week alongside A-level work.

3–6 MONTHS BEFORE (summer to September of Year 13)

Intensive Preparation

Move into full timed-paper practice under realistic conditions. Work with subject-specialist and test-specialist tutors to address persistent gaps. Finalise the personal statement. Begin introductory interview preparation—reading intellectual biographies, short academic papers, and developing the ability to think aloud about unfamiliar problems. Register for tests between 18 June and 19 September 2026.

1-3 Months Before

Test Technique & Registration

The October sitting is approaching. Complete final mock papers under strict timing. Refine technique: pacing, flagging difficult questions, managing the transition between sections. Book test appointments between 18 August and 26 September 2026. Sit the test between 21 and 27 October 2026. Continue reading and thinking around your subject—interviewers will draw on what you describe in your personal statement and what you read recently.

POST-TEST / NOVEMBER–DECEMBER

Interview Preparation

If shortlisted, Oxford and Cambridge interviews fall in late November through mid-December. Shift the focus entirely: read widely, revisit your personal statement critically, complete multiple mock interviews with tutors familiar with your target college’s style. Most Oxbridge offers are made or lost at interview, not on test performance.

FINAL WEEK BEFORE TEST/INTERVIEW

Rest & Focus

Light revision only. Sleep, nutrition, and composure matter enormously. Ensure logistics are confirmed—test centre, timings, documentation, interview venue. Enter each assessment rested, focused, and genuinely prepared to enjoy the challenge of thinking hard under pressure.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Every year, strong A-level candidates are rejected from Oxbridge due to avoidable errors in their test preparation and application strategy. Here are the most common pitfalls we see and how to overcome them.

Preparing for the wrong test

The Solution

Because of the 2026 reforms, some preparation resources, past tutor advice, and older guides still reference the MAT, PAT, TSA, and other retired Oxford tests. Preparing for a test that no longer exists is the single most damaging error a 2026 applicant can make. Verify the current test for your course directly on the Oxford and Cambridge course pages, and only then select preparation material calibrated to that test.

Missing the October sitting

The Solution

The October sitting is the only eligible window for Oxbridge candidates—the January sitting does not count. Registration closes in mid-September, and booking windows close at the end of September. Families who register in October have already missed the cycle. Set calendar reminders from the summer of Year 12 to ensure the deadlines are met calmly rather than discovered in panic.

Treating the test as the whole application

Admissions tests are one element of a four-part assessment: test score, personal statement, predicted grades, and interview. Candidates who devote every available hour to test preparation and neglect personal statement drafting or interview readiness frequently underperform overall—even with a strong test score. Balance preparation across all four elements from the start.

Under-estimating the newer tests

The Solution

Because ESAT, TMUA, and TARA are relatively new, their past-paper banks are thinner and preparation culture around them is less mature. Some applicants assume this means they are "easier" or "more gameable." In reality, they are designed specifically to discriminate between top candidates and reward genuine mathematical, scientific, or reasoning insight. Approach them with at least the seriousness the old tests commanded.

Neglecting timed practice

All major Oxbridge tests are time-pressured—ESAT modules are short, UCAT sections are ruthlessly timed, LNAT's MCQ section rewards pace. Untimed practice gives a misleading sense of readiness. From the six-month mark, every practice session should be timed to replicate real conditions.

Over-focusing on test scores at the expense of written English

The TARA writing task, the LNAT essay, and the personal statement itself all depend on the quality of the applicant's written argument. Strong mathematical and scientific candidates sometimes neglect their writing, assuming it doesn't matter. It does—a weak writing task can sink a TARA score just as surely as weak multiple-choice performance. Practise structured writing throughout.
