Overview of Charterhouse
Founded in 1611, Charterhouse School is one of Britain’s most distinguished independent schools. Located in the historic town of Godalming , the school occupies an expansive campus surrounded by Surrey countryside, just under an hour from London.
Charterhouse educates around 800 pupils aged 13 to 18 and is known for its academic ambition, strong pastoral culture, and commitment to developing thoughtful, well-rounded young people. The school transitioned to full co-education in recent years and now welcomes both boys and girls into its boarding community.
Boarding remains central to life at Charterhouse. Pupils live in one of several houses across the campus, each providing a supportive environment where house staff guide students academically, socially, and personally throughout their time at the school.
Admission to Charterhouse is highly competitive. Each year the school receives significantly more applications than available places for Year 9 entry. Families considering an application should therefore understand the admissions process early and prepare carefully well in advance.
Entry Points & Age Requirements
The main entry point to Charterhouse is Year 9 (age 13). This route accounts for the majority of places offered each year and is the admissions pathway for which the school’s process is primarily designed. Boys and girls applying for Year 9 entry must typically be between their 13th and 14th birthdays on 1 September of the year of entry.
This is the primary route into Charterhouse. Pupils are usually registered during Year 6, before completing the admissions assessments during Years 6–8. Approximately 120–130 places are offered annually through this route.
A smaller number of places are available for Sixth Form entry (Year 12). These places are highly competitive and are usually offered to candidates with exceptional GCSE results and strong references from their current school.
Important: Registration for Year 9 entry should ideally be completed by the end of Year 6. Late applications may sometimes be considered, but places in the assessment process cannot be guaranteed once the deadline has passed.
Registration & Deadlines
The registration process for Charterhouse is straightforward but time-sensitive. Parents must complete a registration form and submit a registration fee through the school’s admissions office.
Once registered, candidates are entered into the school’s admissions process, which includes an online pre-test, academic assessments, and an interview stage.
For many families, the key to a successful application is early planning . Understanding the timeline allows pupils to develop the academic skills and confidence required for a strong performance during the selection process.

Planning ahead: Many families begin considering Charterhouse when their child is 8 or 9 years old. Early preparation allows pupils to strengthen academic foundations and build the confidence needed for competitive assessments.

The Assessment Process
The Charterhouse admissions process is designed to evaluate a pupil’s academic ability, intellectual curiosity, and character. Understanding each stage helps families prepare effectively.
Stage 1: The ISEB Common Pre-Test
Registered candidates typically sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test during the autumn term of Year 6. This computer-adaptive test evaluates ability in four areas:
Verbal reasoning
Non-verbal reasoning
English
Mathematics
The test adjusts its difficulty depending on the candidate’s answers, meaning stronger pupils encounter more challenging questions as the assessment progresses.
Performance in this test plays a significant role in determining whether a pupil progresses to the next stage of the admissions process.
Stage 2: Charterhouse Entrance Assessments (Year 8)
Candidates who perform strongly in the pre-test may be invited to sit further assessments set by Charterhouse during Year 8.
These typically involve written examinations that assess:
Analytical thinking
Mathematical reasoning
Written communication
Problem-solving ability
The school is interested not simply in knowledge but in how candidates approach complex questions and express ideas clearly.
Stage 3: The Interview
The interview is a central part of the admissions process and usually takes place during the Year 8 assessment period.
Interviews are typically conducted by senior members of staff and are designed to explore a pupil’s:
Intellectual curiosity
Personality and confidence
Interests beyond the classroom
Ability to think independently
Candidates should be prepared to discuss their hobbies, favourite subjects, recent books they have read, and topics in the news.
Insider insight: The interview is not just about academic achievement. Interviewers are looking for boys who show genuine enthusiasm, the ability to think independently, and a willingness to engage with new ideas. Our consultants, including former Charterhouse housemasters, can provide detailed guidance on what to expect.
Interview Preparation
For many families, the interview can feel like the most unpredictable stage of the admissions process. However, thoughtful preparation can make a significant difference.
Practice Articulating Interests
Boys should be able to speak fluently and enthusiastically about what they enjoy, whether that is sport, music, science, or a particular period of history. Surface-level answers are not sufficient.
Engage With Current Affairs
Reading broadsheet newspapers and quality publications helps boys form opinions on topical issues. Interviewers often ask about recent events to gauge awareness and critical thinking.
Read Widely and Deeply
A well-read candidate stands out. Boys should be able to discuss books they have enjoyed, explain why a particular author resonated with them, and articulate ideas clearly.
Mock Interview Practice
Simulated interviews with experienced consultants help boys build confidence, refine their answers, and learn to manage nerves in a formal setting.
Academic Expectations
Charterhouse maintains high academic standards and expects incoming pupils to demonstrate strong foundations in core subjects.
The school offers a broad curriculum spanning the sciences, humanities, languages, and creative disciplines. Pupils typically study a wide range of subjects at GCSE before specialising further at A-level.
Many pupils go on to study at leading universities in the UK and internationally. Each year, a number of students receive offers from prestigious institutions including University of Oxford and University of Cambridge .
Successful applicants to Charterhouse often demonstrate:
Strong academic curiosity
Excellent study habits
Intellectual independence
Enthusiasm for learning beyond the classroom
Equally important is a willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school through sport, arts, or community activities.
Fees & Financial Information
Radley College’s fees reflect the high standard of teaching, facilities, boarding provision, and extracurricular opportunities offered to pupils.
Fees typically include tuition, boarding, and access to a wide range of school facilities and activities.
Charterhouse also offers a number of means-tested bursaries designed to support families who would not otherwise be able to afford the full cost of fees. These can cover a significant proportion of tuition depending on financial circumstances.
In addition, a limited number of academic, music, art, and sporting scholarships are available for pupils demonstrating exceptional ability.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Having guided hundreds of families through the admissions process, we have identified several recurring mistakes that can undermine an otherwise strong application.
Leaving registration too late
The registration deadline is firm. Families who miss it may find their kids cannot be considered for their preferred year of entry.
Underestimating the ISEB Pre-test
The pre-test is adaptive and challenging. Without proper preparation, even bright kids may not perform to their full potential.
Neglecting interview preparation
Some families focus exclusively on academics and overlook the interview. At Radley, personality, curiosity, and character are assessed alongside intellectual ability.
Over-coaching and inauthenticity
Interviewers at Radley are skilled at identifying rehearsed responses. Boys should be well-prepared but also genuine, natural, and confident in expressing their own views.
Ignoring extracurricular breadth
Radley values well-rounded individuals. A boy with only academic achievements may be less compelling than one who also demonstrates passion in sport, music, drama, or community service.
