Overview of Tonbridge School
Founded in 1553, Tonbridge School is one of the most academically distinguished independent boarding schools in the United Kingdom. Located in Kent, the school is known for its rigorous academic standards, vibrant extracurricular life, and strong university placement record.
Tonbridge educates around 800 boys aged 13–18, the majority of whom join at Year 9 (age 13). The school operates primarily as a boarding school, although a number of day places are also available.
Tonbridge has developed a reputation for combining academic excellence with intellectual curiosity and independent thinking. Pupils benefit from an ambitious curriculum and are encouraged to explore their interests beyond the classroom through societies, lectures, competitions, and independent projects.
Admissions are highly competitive each year, attracting applicants from leading preparatory schools across the UK and internationally. The school looks for boys who demonstrate strong academic potential, curiosity, character, and enthusiasm for learning.
Many Tonbridge pupils progress to leading universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and other top institutions in the UK and internationally.
Entry Points & Age Requirements
Tonbridge School offers several entry routes depending on a student’s age.
The primary entry point is Year 9 (13+), when the majority of pupils join the school.
Candidates usually begin the admissions process several years earlier, with registration typically taking place while the student is in Year 5 or Year 6.
Applicants sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test during Year 6, followed by Tonbridge’s own assessments in Year 8.
A smaller number of places are available for Sixth Form entry (Year 12).
Applicants must demonstrate strong GCSE or equivalent results and clear academic potential for A-level study.
Important: Occasionally, places may become available in other year groups depending on availability. Families considering Tonbridge are encouraged to register early and begin preparation well in advance of entrance assessments .

The Assessment Process
Tonbridge School’s admissions process is designed to identify pupils who will thrive in a challenging academic environment.
The process typically includes several stages.
Stage 1: The ISEB Common Pre-Test
Candidates applying for 13+ entry usually sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test in the autumn term of Year 6.
The test is computer-based and evaluates:
Verbal reasoning
Non-verbal reasoning
Mathematics
English
The results help Tonbridge determine which candidates will progress to the next stage.
Stage 2: Tonbridge Entrance Assessments
Shortlisted candidates are invited to complete additional assessments during Year 8.
These may include written papers in subjects such as:
English
Mathematics
Science
Analytical reasoning
The aim is to assess both academic ability and independent thinking.
Stage 3: The Interview
Candidates are also invited to attend an interview with Tonbridge staff.
The interview allows admissions tutors to evaluate:
Intellectual curiosity
Communication skills
Confidence and character
Enthusiasm for learning
The discussion is typically conversational and designed to explore how a candidate approaches ideas and questions.
Insider insight: The Tonbridge interview is not just about academic achievement. Interviewers are looking for boys who show genuine enthusiasm, the ability to think independently, and a willingness to engage with new ideas. Our consultants, including former Tonbridge housemasters, can provide detailed guidance on what to expect.
Interview Preparation
The interview provides an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their curiosity, personality, and interest in learning.
Successful candidates often show genuine enthusiasm for academic ideas and broader interests.
Practice Articulating Interests
Boys should be able to speak fluently and enthusiastically about what they enjoy, whether that is sport, music, science, or a particular period of history. Surface-level answers are not sufficient.
Engage With Current Affairs
Reading broadsheet newspapers and quality publications helps boys form opinions on topical issues. Interviewers often ask about recent events to gauge awareness and critical thinking.
Read Widely and Deeply
A well-read candidate stands out. Boys should be able to discuss books they have enjoyed, explain why a particular author resonated with them, and articulate ideas clearly.
Mock Interview Practice
Simulated interviews with experienced consultants help boys build confidence, refine their answers, and learn to manage nerves in a formal setting.
Academic Expectations
Tonbridge School maintains exceptionally high academic standards.
The curriculum includes a wide range of subjects including:
Pupils are encouraged to pursue academic interests beyond the classroom through societies, lectures, competitions, and research projects.
Tonbridge places strong emphasis on intellectual curiosity, independent thought, and academic ambition.
Fees & Financial Information
Tonbridge School’s fees reflect the quality of teaching, facilities, boarding accommodation, and extracurricular opportunities available to pupils.
The school offers a range of scholarships and bursaries to support talented pupils.
Bursaries are means-tested and may cover up to 100% of school fees depending on financial circumstances.
Scholarships may be awarded for academic achievement, music, sport, or other areas of excellence.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Having guided hundreds of families through the admissions process, we have identified several recurring mistakes that can undermine an otherwise strong application.
Leaving registration too late
The registration deadline is firm. Families who miss it may find their son cannot be considered for their preferred year of entry.
Underestimating the ISEB Pre-test
The pre-test is adaptive and challenging. Without proper preparation, even bright boys may not perform to their full potential.
Neglecting interview preparation
Some families focus exclusively on academics and overlook the interview. At Tonbridge, personality, curiosity, and character are assessed alongside intellectual ability.
Over-coaching and inauthenticity
Interviewers are skilled at identifying rehearsed responses. Boys should be well-prepared but also genuine, natural, and confident in expressing their own views.
Ignoring extracurricular breadth
Tonbridge values well-rounded individuals. A boy with only academic achievements may be less compelling than one who also demonstrates passion in sport, music, drama, or community service.
