Overview of Fettes College
Founded in 1870 through the legacy of Sir William Fettes, Fettes College is Scotland’s most famous independent boarding and day school, often described as the Fettes of Scotland. Set in a striking Gothic building on the northern edge of Edinburgh, the co-educational school educates pupils from 7 to 18 and has produced leaders in politics, business and the arts, including a former British Prime Minister. Fettes combines a rigorous academic tradition with a genuinely international outlook, and is today the leading school in Scotland for the International Baccalaureate.
Entry Points & Age Requirements
Fettes offers two main entry points into the Senior School, though the majority of pupils join at 13.
13+ (Third Form) is the principal entry point to the Senior School. Pupils are usually registered a year or more in advance and are assessed through the school’s own entrance examinations and an interview, sometimes alongside Common Entrance or the ISEB Common Pre-Test. Places are competitive and demand for boarding is strong.
16+ (Lower Sixth) is the second main entry point, offered to pupils with strong GCSE results who wish to join for A-Levels or the IB Diploma. Candidates sit papers in three subjects, together with an additional English paper for those whose first language is not English, and attend an interview with a member of the senior team.
Important: entrance assessments for the following September usually take place in the November beforehand, so registering early is essential, particularly for families applying from overseas.

The Assessment Process

Stage 1: Registration and School Reference
