Overview of Millfield School
Founded in 1935, Millfield is one of the largest and best-known co-educational boarding and day schools in the country, set on a 240-acre campus at Street in Somerset. It is famous worldwide for sporting excellence, having educated many Olympians and internationals, but is equally distinctive for its exceptional learning support and a genuinely inclusive, individual approach. Pupils aged 13 to 18 follow a broad programme with more than sixty sports alongside strong academics, music, drama and the arts.
Entry Points & Age Requirements
Millfield’s main entry point is at 13, one of the largest 13+ intakes of any UK school, with further entry at 16 and a junior school feeding younger years.
13+ into Year 9 is the principal entry point, with around 200 pupils joining each year. Selection is based on academic merit, assessed through entrance tests, an interview and a reference from the current school. Boarding and day places are both in demand.
16+ entry into the Sixth Form is offered to pupils with suitable GCSE results who wish to study A-Levels. Candidates sit assessments and attend an interview, and Millfield’s scale means a wide range of subjects and pathways is available.
Important: Millfield assesses each pupil individually, and its strong learning support means it welcomes able pupils with a range of needs; an early visit to Somerset is strongly recommended.

Millfield looks for pupils who will make the most of its exceptional breadth, in the classroom, on the sports field and beyond, and assesses each child individually.
Stage 1: Registration and School Reference
