Overview of Loretto School
Founded in 1827, Loretto is Scotland’s oldest boarding school, a co-educational day and boarding school set in eighty-five acres of leafy campus at Musselburgh, just six miles from the centre of Edinburgh. With the city, its airport and the coast all close at hand, Loretto combines a genuine boarding community with easy access to Scotland’s capital. Entry Points & Age Requirements
Loretto accepts pupils into almost every year group subject to availability, with the main points of entry into the Senior School at 13 and 16.
13+ is the principal entry point into the Senior School. Pupils are assessed individually, usually through the school’s own assessment in English, mathematics and reasoning, together with a reference from their current school and an interview. More than half of pupils board, so demand for boarding places is strong.
16+ entry into the Sixth Form is offered to pupils with strong GCSE results who wish to study A-Levels or BTECs. Applicants provide a school reference and GCSE results or predictions, sit subject assessments and attend an interview.
Important: assessments can begin as early as Year 4 for younger entry, and senior places fill steadily through the year, so registering early gives the widest choice of boarding house and start date.

Families begin with a registration form and fee, after which the school arranges an assessment, requests a reference from the current school and warmly encourages a visit to the Musselburgh campus.

The Assessment Process
Loretto looks for pupils who will contribute to a friendly, close boarding community and make the most of its academic, sporting and co-curricular opportunities. The assessment is designed to build a rounded picture of each child.
Stage 1: Registration and School Reference
After registration, Loretto requests recent reports and a reference from the current school, giving an early sense of the pupil’s academic standing, effort and involvement in school life.
Stage 2: Entrance Assessment
Pupils sit an age-appropriate assessment, typically in English, mathematics and reasoning at 13+, or subject papers at 16+. The papers focus on understanding and potential rather than memorised knowledge.
Stage 3: Visit and Taster Day
