Overview of Gordonstoun
Founded in 1934 by the German educationalist Kurt Hahn, Gordonstoun is a co-educational boarding and day school set on a large coastal estate near Elgin in Moray, north-east Scotland. It is one of the most distinctive schools in Britain, built around Hahn’s belief that character is developed through challenge, service and the outdoors as much as through the classroom. Famous for its expeditions, seamanship and its own sail-training vessel, Gordonstoun has educated three generations of the Royal Family, including the Duke of Edinburgh and King Charles III.
Entry Points & Age Requirements
Gordonstoun welcomes pupils from the age of four through to eighteen, with the main points of entry into the Senior School at 13 and 16.
13+ is the principal entry point into the Senior School. Pupils are assessed through the school’s own entrance process, which may include Common Entrance or an equivalent assessment, together with a reference from the current school and an interview. Boarding places are in demand, so early registration is advised.
16+ entry into the Sixth Form is offered to pupils with strong GCSE results who wish to study A-Levels, BTECs or the Extended Project. Applicants provide a school reference, evidence of English proficiency and their GCSE results or predictions, and attend an interview as part of the process.
Important: places at popular entry points are limited, and the school’s distinctive boarding and outdoor programme means an early visit to Moray is strongly recommended before applying.

The Assessment Process

Stage 1: Registration and School Reference
After registering, the school requests recent reports and a reference from the current school, giving an early picture of the pupil’s academic standing, effort and involvement in wider school life.

Gordonstoun combines a strong academic programme with its wider character education. Most pupils take around nine GCSEs before progressing to three or four A-Levels, with options including BTECs and the Extended Project Qualification. In 2025 the school reported its strongest GCSE results in six years, and leavers regularly progress to leading universities including Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews, Edinburgh and Durham.

Gordonstoun offers scholarships that recognise talent in academics, art, drama, music, sport and, fittingly, sailing and piping, alongside means-tested bursaries. Around a third of pupils receive some form of financial support.
