What is the UKiset?

The UKiset (UK Independent Schools’ Entry Test) is a standardised online assessment used by over 100 leading independent schools across the UK as part of their admissions process for international students. It provides UK boarding and day schools with a consistent benchmark against which to evaluate candidates applying from a wide variety of international educational backgrounds.

Who Takes It

International students aged 9–18 applying to selective UK independent schools such as Eton, Harrow, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Rugby, Sevenoaks, and Charterhouse. Children educated outside the UK schooling system are typically required to sit the UKiset before submitting a formal application.

When It's Taken

Usually 12–18 months before the intended year of entry. Results remain valid for one year from the test date, after which a re-sit is required. Candidates should aim to sit the UKiset well before individual school application deadlines.

Test Format

A computer-adaptive online test taking approximately 2 hours to complete, sat at an approved UKiset test centre under supervised conditions. Candidates nominate up to five schools that will receive their results directly.

Test Structure & Sections

Verbal Reasoning

Comprises Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Quantitative Reasoning. English

Assesses Listening, Reading, Grammar, and Vocabulary. Candidates listen to recorded passages, read texts of increasing complexity, and answer questions testing comprehension, inference, and technical English proficiency. Results are mapped directly to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) levels, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient).

Creative Writing

A handwritten essay of approximately 300 words, produced in response to an age-appropriate prompt. This section is not machine-scored; instead, it is shared with schools as a personal writing sample that reveals the candidate’s ability to structure ideas, use English naturally, and showcase personality and creativity.

How the UKiset is Scored

The UKiset uses a multi-layered reporting system rather than producing a single aggregate score. Each section generates its own result, giving admissions teams a detailed profile of the candidate’s abilities across cognitive, linguistic, and expressive domains.
