How Much Do Private Schools Cost?

However, headline fees don’t tell the whole story. Scholarships typically offer 5-20% fee reductions, often combined with means-tested bursary top-ups.

Additional costs to budget for include: school uniform (£500-1,500 initially), music lessons (£400-800 per term), school trips (£500-3,000 for overseas trips), examination fees (£500-1,000 for GCSE/A-Level years), and extras like art materials or sports equipment. Some schools include more in their headline fee than others, so always request a full cost breakdown.

Why Are Private Schools Called “Public Schools”?

The confusing terminology dates back centuries. Originally, “public schools” were open to any boy whose family could afford the fees, regardless of location, religion, or social standing. This distinguished them from local grammar schools (restricted to parish residents) and private tutoring (for aristocracy only).

What Are Class Sizes in UK Private Schools?

Average class sizes in leading private schools range from 10 to 18 pupils, compared to 27-30 in state schools. This is often cited as the primary academic advantage of independent education, allowing teachers to provide more individual attention and stretch the most able students.

Class sizes vary by subject and year group. Core subjects like English and Mathematics typically have larger classes (15-18), while A-Level classes and specialist subjects may have as few as 4-8 pupils. Setting (streaming by ability) is common, with top sets often smaller to allow advanced study.
